Finding my place in this Universe
What is spirituality? Are you searching for a connection? Are you trying to find meaning? For most, it is a belief in something bigger than ourselves.
How do you know where to start? I have felt a deep pull to broaden my horizons on the spiritual plane. I want a deeper connection with the universe. I love nature and being outdoors. Whether it is sitting by a fire enjoying the sounds of the crackling, floating on the water soaking in the sun, taking a hike and hearing the wind singing, or playing in the garden and hearing the buzz from the pollinators.
I started doing mindful minutes about a month ago. It is an app on my apple watch that alerts me that we need to take a mindful minute. I figured, what can hurt from doing a minute or two at least once daily? When I started it, I was baffled about what I was supposed to do. The watch tells you to pay attention to your breath and makes a few vibrations as you breathe in and nothing while you breathe out, or vice versa.
After doing it for a week, I wanted to do it longer. So I started looking up how to meditate. The list of different types of meditations out there is tremendous. You can also meditate for various reasons, like calming your anxiety, inviting healing energy, lowering stress, and much more. But the basics are 1. take a seat, 2. set a time limit, 3. notice your body (make sure it is a stable position you can stay in for however long you set your time), 4. Feel your breath (feel it go in and out) 5. When your mind wanders, bring it back to your breath, and don't judge yourself for the thoughts coming in. 6. Close with kindness (when your time is up, take a moment to listen to the sounds around you, notice how your body feels, and notice how your mind feels).
I do 5 minutes when I do it. There are days that things get away from me, and I do not do it. My goal is to do it first thing in the morning and last thing before bed. As I continue to adjust my routines, I will get there. On the days I meditate, it clears my mind, gives me energy, releases my anxiety, or calms me. Each time it is different for me anyway. I am getting benefits in a good way from it, so I will continue to grow with my meditation.
I downloaded the smiling mind app to help me grow in my meditation. I chose this one because it has over 300 completely free guided meditations. There are a ton of meditation apps that you can download, YouTube videos to watch, and programs that you can take if you have the finances to do so. The nice thing about having the app is I can set a timer that goes off at the same time every day to build a routine. I put my timer for when I start my bedtime routine, so I can focus on clearing my mind and sleeping better.
If you are looking to reground yourself in the morning to prepare you for success throughout the day, set yours for in the morning. You can also set it for the middle of the day to have a moment of a refresh. Find what time works best for you. Even if you work from home or outside of the house.
You can do this at any age. Invite your children or significant other to join you in a couple of sessions. This may inspire them to start their own meditation practice. Or it can be something you can do together while still working on yourselves. I asked my 13-year-old if she would like to do a meditation session with me the other evening, and she did enjoy it. Or that’s what she told me, at least. We will see if she joins me again or if she was just being kind and doing something I like to do.
When I start adding in crystals and sage, I picture my family thinking I am weird, but I get so much from this and want to learn even more. I have started my research into using crystals and burning sage for the cleansing properties of your energy and space. Once I try it, I will share my experience with you. If you use crystals and have an excellent book for me to read, please share, I would love to learn more about them.
Some of us already have some connection to the universe. If you feel peaceful with meditation, avoid negative people and behaviors, feel compassionate and positive, ask questions about life and death, find meaning and purpose in life, are hopeful when things are changing, are in the present moment, have a strong sense of self-worth, feel connected with your soul, feel at peace when alone, have empathy and intuition, and believe life is sacred and should be embraced, you have signs of spirituality.
