Will there be food options for me?
Hello lovelies, I hope you are doing well and enjoying life. A couple weekends ago, I had a bachelorette party to go to. It was not your typical bar hopping or strip club type, which was refreshing.
It was a camping boating party. We all met up around 11 am to start all of the festivities. My sister took out her pontoon to drive us all around for a day filled with beaches, lounging in tubes, a bonfire, and yard games.
The waves crashing on the beach was so soothing. I did not want to leave. I dreamed of just moving in and setting up a permanent camp but that is not realistic at this time. Maybe one day.
I was a little stressed about what foods would be there and did not want to bring my own food and look like a weirdo. Thankfully when we stopped at one bar for lunch, I got some chicken wings.
Our food at the campsite was burgers, brats, chips, and a vegetable platter. I could not eat any buns due to the gluten and did not want to get sick while camping. So I filled up with lots of vegetables and a few potato chips.
No, this was not the epitome of healthy eating, but I am trying to find ways of still being social without being a pain in the arse regarding food.
Everyone was understanding and very lovely regarding what I could eat. They actually asked for suggestions for when we get together again. This filled me with comfort and love.
Be open with those you spend your time with. Stop trying to fit in. This is your body, not theirs. If they can not understand and be there for you, they may not be worth hanging out with.
For me, anything with wheat, barley, or rye causes severe reactions. I become violently ill, get red hives, and bloat like crazy. Somedays, I feel lost when it comes to what I can make for food.
I am still in the process of finding new ways to make our favorite dishes. My family tries them and gives me feedback. Some they love and others not so much.
The other night I really wanted some Alfredo. So I picked up some brown rice fettuccini noodles, alfredo sauce, and freshly grated parmesan. Well, the noodles were not inedible, but..... I definitely will not buy it again.
I must remind myself that this will take trial and error before I find what works and tastes great. When I feel at a loss for recipes, I search for recipes on Pinterest, the internet, and cookbooks.
Once I have been making meals for a while, I will feel more grounded and start putting more of my own spin on them or coming up with my own recipes. I have a few under my belt and will continue building my recipe arsenal.
If you have certain restrictions that you have to abide by, stick with them. Eventually, it will be second nature, and you will have a wide array of dishes you can make without pulling out a recipe guide.
I get it. It can be hard some days and in certain situations, but is having a reaction to what you are allergic to worth the social outing being ruined because you had that reaction? NO!
A few things I have learned so far regarding eating at a restaurant or having to grab something from the gas station are to look for meals with meat and vegetables when you go out to a restaurant. Get the salad with the meal, and do not be afraid to ask if they have gluten-free options. Most places these days are adding gluten-free options.
If you have to grab something from the gas station, look for vegetables, cheese, meat, nuts, or fruit. We are fortunate in Wisconsin to have a Kwik Trip that offers some great food options. Not all gas stations have a full-service food station, so look for those nuts, meats, and cheeses.
It is also perfectly ok to pack a few snacks for yourself if you know you will be going somewhere where you are unsure of what options you will have available.
