Have you tried shaving your face?

As a female shaving, your face was never something we were told about for skin health. We have been told to shave our legs, our pits, and our bikini area, but never our face. Why are men’s faces different in that they are taught to shave? Is it just because their facial hair is so much more distinct?

Women have always been told to avoid shaving their faces and that is why this hair removal technique comes as a shocker. The reason is probably because of the common belief that shaving increases the risk of cuts and infections, causes redness and pigmentation, and makes hair grow darker and thicker as compared to waxing, threading, and other forms of hair removal.

We have been told for years the less hair we have the better. I do not necessarily agree with this as the hair on your body is there for a reason but trimming and maintaining would be a better option. Have you waxed, threaded, or plucked? OUCH, it is not a fun process. Did you know that the Japanese have been shaving their faces for years? They have been on this trend before it was even a trend.

What are the benefits of shaving?

No matter where you are shaving on your body there are benefits to shaving.

It removes dead skin cells, improves appearance, reduces body odor, allows moisture to penetrate deeper into the skin, gives you a younger appearance, and removes excess oil. Well, no wonder as men age, they look better! They exfoliate, moisturize, and clean their face every day by shaving.

A dermatologist’s thoughts.

Yes, shaving your face can have benefits. It will remove dead skin cells and unwanted hair. Be sure to use a fresh clean razor that is designed for your face. Wet the face with warm water to soften the hair and shave IN THE DIRECTION of the hair growth. This technique helps prevent nicks and cuts. Finish with a moisturizer that is rich in antioxidants to prevent inflammation and irritation.

Things to consider

Is your skin acne prone? If your answer is yes, it is advised you avoid shaving as it could irritate breakout, cut skin, and create more scarring.

Does the hair grow back thicker and darker? No, it is just more visible due to the stubble.

Will it cause redness or inflammation? Not typically but it can happen. This is usually due to a blunt or dull razor, applying too much pressure, or acne.

Benefits

Exfoliation of our skin. This unclogs pores, prevents acne, helps products penetrate deeper, evens skin tone, and boosts circulation and lymphatic drainage.

A more youthful look and glow to the skin.

Smoother makeup application. Due to the removal of peach fuzz, dead skin cells, and excess oils, the makeup can sit smoothly on your skin giving the application an extremely natural look.

It is painless and inexpensive. You do not need a super special or fancy razor, just make sure the head bends along the curves of your face to prevent nicks. Most razors these days are multi-blade and the head bends to follow the body contours.

Personal thoughts

I have been shaving my face for years now. I heard about it when watching Mob Wives almost 10 years ago now. I was so intrigued I did a ton of research and started shaving my face a couple of times a week every week since then. It has been one of the best grooming practices I have tried, and I absolutely love it. My makeup application goes on smoother, my skincare products penetrate deeper, and I do not have to worry about funky dark hairs that need to be plucked as I age.

I remember the first time my husband caught me shaving my face and wanted to know what I was doing. So, I explained how it has all these benefits and men should not be the only ones getting them. He I always just go with the flow with all my weird doings, 😂. I love that man so much I cannot even explain it.

If you are interested go grab your razor, wash your face, apply a thin layer of shave cream, and shave that face, you will not regret it.
