Circadian Rhythm
Every night I crawl into bed, my mind goes into overdrive. A better visual would be a bouncy ball thrown into a trampoline bouncing all over the place and not losing momentum. I am going over all the things that happened throughout my day, saying my prayers, saying my thanks, imagining my future, and telling myself inspirational thoughts when I am down on myself. As I lay there telling myself inspirational things or calming my negative self-talk, I feel I should grab a pen and paper to write them down so I won't forget. If I do that, I will be up forever, and my brain will just continue running a marathon.
I have really been trying to get better sleep. Several studies have shown that your circadian rhythm can throw off so much if you are out of whack. Having a good circadian rhythm lets your body heal itself. Your brain needs to shut down and reboot, heal your skin, repair your gut, and heal your muscles.
I minimize my screen time (wearing blue-light glasses and adding a red light will help your body naturally get into a restful state) or altogether avoid it after 7:45-8:45 pm. After I get off all electronics, I begin my nighttime routine. Washing my face, getting all my serums and creams on. Taking my vitamins and medications. Setting out my clothes for the next day. Setting my alarms and spraying my bed with a soothing room spray.
When my alarm goes off in the am, I get up. Let my dogs out and pour a cup of coffee. I then sit out on the patio since it is summer. I take about 5-10 min to sit there, listen to nature and wake up. I then do my daily motivational on my phone. Once I have fully woken up, I start getting ready for my day. I wash my face, brush my teeth, and put on my face creams (vitamin C, moisturizer, sunscreen, and a BB cream).
During my lunch break, I take a quick walk (weather permitting), do yoga, meditate, or just relax to reboot during the midday slump. This helps keep me moving since I have a desk job.
Stick to a schedule. Going to bed and getting up at the same time every day will put you in a circadian rhythm. Put your electronics to do not disturb, plug them in away from next to your bed, and carry out some form of nighttime routine.
When you get up in the morning, try not to get on your phone immediately. Take a few minutes to let yourself wake up before you subject yourself to all that blue light. Try doing meditation, working out, journaling, or just noticing the world around you.
Over the last month, the first 10 minutes of my day have been just noticing the world around me. This quick micro change has helped me change my energy levels during the day and sleep better at night.
Of course, I still have some days where I am just burnt out, and nothing helps other than resting. When that happens, I listen to my body and rest. I am continuing to work on balancing out everything I need and want to do each day, week, month, and year.
We will all have those times when we are super energized and want to accomplish as much as possible, so we will push ourselves till we run out of all that energy and need to recharge. I will continue to share as I continue my journey to get my day-to-day balanced out, so I do not have ups and downs with my energy.
